Swift Block SM (GB)

The Swift Block nest box is designed to create nesting space for our declining Swift population. This simple, stylish solution can be easily retrofitted or surface mounted onto existing properties or can be integrated into new builds, as desired.
Loss of habitat is a big problem for our returning swifts, with populations decreasing by over 50% in the last twenty years. By creating habitat for swifts to nest on our homes we can hopefully start to reverse this decline and protect these wonderful birds as they return to the UK each summer.
The Swift Block swift box features an internal nesting bowl, a small entrance hole to deter larger birds and predators, and is UK standard block size. It can be purchased with a fixing kit to enable surface mounting.
Swifts will use materials they gather whilst on the wing to build their nest, including feathers, seeds, paper and straw. They normally lay 2 or 3 eggs at 2-3 day intervals and the young hatch a few days apart. Whilst being fed a diet of insects, young Swifts will start to move around the nest at around 2-3 weeks old, starting to do ‘press-ups’ to strengthen their wings! They will spend a lot of time looking out from the nest, preparing to leave, and it’s little wonder as once they do leave they remain on the wing for the next 3 years, eating, sleeping and mating in the sky!

Made from cast concrete using up to 75% recycled materials from the Cornish China Clay industry.
If you select the surface mounted option your Swift Block will be supplied with stainless steel screws, wall plugs and washers to install.

Positioning
The Swift Block swift box should be positioned at least 5m from ground level, on a side of the building that gets shade during the day, or under an overhang or the eaves, away from windows and vents and predator access. Swift Blocks should also be placed in a spot with clear adjacent access, allowing high speed, direct flight entry.
