See the 99% of biodiversity lost from the UK

This trip is a real eye-opener for those who think we still have biodiversity in the UK. Yes, we have areas in the UK that are more biodiverse than others, but that's like saying sheep pasture is more biodiverse than a bowling green. Come and see the biodiversity that existed in the UK long ago!

About the event

Spaces are limited, with only four now available. We take a maximum of six guests.

Be prepared to be blown away by how much biodiversity the UK has lost! We'll spend our days slowly bimbling around the countryside, mainly on paths and tracks but also up to and through the flower-rich hay-meadows. In the evenings, and early mornings, you can sit out and watch the beavers in our 'back garden'. Or bring a bat detector and listen to the many bats that feed on the multitude of insects.

During the day you'll be amazed at how noisy the countryside is, thrumming with insects calling and complemented beautifully by myriad birds, including golden orioles, yellowhammers (now rare or absent in much of the UK), quail and corncrakes.

There are usually ample butterflies to grab your attention and these might include purple emperors, poplar admirals, swallowtails, brimstones, maps, large coppers and more fritillaries than you can shake a stick at.

Crickets of various species are abundant, including the great green bush-cricket, Roesel's bush-cricket, field-crickets and mole-crickets.

There are seven species of woodpecker: black, green, grey-headed, greater spotted, lesser spotted, white-backed and wryneck.

White storks are common and you may be lucky enough to see the beautiful black storks that hunt along the rivers.

Red-backed shrikes are common summer visitors, as are spotted flycatchers and fieldfares - yes, fieldfares breed here!

If you like the challenge of 'LBJs', there are plenty of warblers including marsh warblers. We may even be able to show you the stunning barred warbler, if we're lucky. Willow tits are common, because of the beavers!

Wolves, lynx, wildcats, pine martens and wild boar wander the forest, though you're unlikely to see lynx and wildcat - we've had good views of wolf, pine marten and wild boar, but it's a matter of luck. Bears are very rare or absent, sadly.

Come and see what the British Isles probably looked like 200+ years ago!
